Health Information Exchange
The Camden Health Information Exchange (HIE) was launched in 2010 and is the result of a collaborative data sharing effort to improve care delivery in Camden. The original founders of the HIE are Cooper Health System, Virtua, and Our Lady of Lourdes Health System. The HIE is currently used by over 100 healthcare providers in Camden.
The HIE’s web-based technology offers Camden city and regional healthcare providers real-time access to important medical information for Camden patients. It also facilitates sharing of detailed clinical data among primary hospitals, physician practices, laboratory and radiology groups, along with regional hospitals and healthcare institutions.
In order to protect the privacy of the patients, the HIE is built and governed to ensure that only patients’ healthcare providers can access personal health information.
The Camden HIE is partially funded by a grant through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA), as administered by the New Jersey Health Information Network (NJHIN), to promote state-wide healthcare information exchange across New Jersey.
The Data
The HIE includes the following hospital data:
- ADT (admissions/discharge/transfer) transactions
- Lab results
- Radiology results
- Discharge summaries
Why It’s Important
For the first time, Camden’s healthcare providers have important clinical information about their patients at their fingertips, which can reduce unnecessary duplication and inefficiencies, and foster improved care coordination.
Further, for Coalition staff, this data can be used to identify patients for possible enrollment in the Coalition’s Care Management and Care Transitions programs.
