Camden Practice Management Project

Background

Medical practices in Camden face numerous challenges and barriers in the process of delivering care on a day-to-day basis.  A typical community-based medical practice in Camden is a small office that experiences poor reimbursement rates and low profit margins, provides care to a very complex patient population, has frequent staff turnover, lacks updated technology and capital improvements, and experiences an overwhelming amount of paperwork requests.  With little resource options and the means to develop practice improvement plans, the offices often survive at a limited capacity.  With an aging provider population in Camden, the future of practices of this kind is very uncertain.

The Coalition believes that well-run outpatient offices:

  • improve the quality and accessibility of medical care
  • result in higher patient adherence rates and improved patient satisfaction
  • increase the ability of patients to manage their own disease and achieve optimum health
  • are easier and more pleasurable to work in
  • are more profitable, and
  • lower the use of unnecessary care (ie. hospitalizations/ER use)
  • Significant improvements could be made in the health status of Camden residents by working to improve and modernize the operations and management of the healthcare offices from which they receive their care.

    The Practice Management Project

In effort to improve healthcare delivery in Camden, the Coalition's Practice Management Project targets to improve the operations and capacity of health provider practices in the city. During the monthly sessions, with the coaching of Dr. Eidus, participants develop an array of practical management skills to help identify barriers and develop solutionstheir office operate more smoothly and efficiently.
