Camden GPS Program:
Guidance.  Preservation.  Support.

NEW!

Studies have shown that hospital-based violence prevention can help reduce the rates of hospital recidivism for retaliation, re-injury, and arrest for violent crimes.  By providing linkages to educational and community resources, assistance in accessing needed follow-up medical care, and critical emotional and social support to patients and their families, victims of violence can be redirected to seek alternative behaviors, lifestyles, and avoid further conflicts.  Violence places enormous stress, not only on public safety and the justice system, but on the health system as well.

Modeled after similar programs operating in cities across the country, including Oakland, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, the Coalition has launched the Camden GPS Program to help Camden young adults aged 14-24 years who are treated in city Emergency Departments and hospitals for injuries sustained by violence.  Working directly with hospital providers and staff and in partnership with the Center for Family Services, an Intervention Specialist will meet with the patient, develop a relationship with the patient and his/her family, help define personal needs and goals, and provide assistance and long-term support.  The Intervention Specialist will also coordinate care, from probation/parole officers, teachers and school administrators, social workers, and youth development programming.  Support is entirely client-centered, and could include linking resources, such as:

  • Anger management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Career development
  • Job training/placement
  • Legal aid
  • Medical follow-up
  • Counseling
