Volunteer Program

Volunteer Program Overview

The Coalition’s volunteer program welcomes committed, service-minded students or community residents to assist in the operations of the organization and/or specific program tasks and activities. A volunteer is a representative of the Coalition and is expected to work alongside staff, community partners, and/or patients, with respect and objectivity. Ideal volunteers include students in the areas of public health, nursing, medicine, social work, and nutrition.

If you would like to join the Coalition as volunteer, please see the requirements below and contact us with your interest. Please note that we will do our best to match a volunteer with his/her specific areas of study or interest, but this cannot be guaranteed. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer financial compensation for volunteer service.  However, volunteers who register with the AmeriCorps program are entitled to a monthly stipend and those who complete their service commitment are entitled to an educational award for loan repayment or future educational tuition expenses.

Requirements

Much of our work revolves around developing and nurturing relationships with patients, as well as with community partners. Therefore, we require that all volunteers:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Commit to a minimum of 20-40 hours per week for at least 6 consecutive months of service.  Shorter service commitment opportunities may be available — please email for more information.

Benefits of Volunteering

There are many potential benefits to volunteering with the Coalition. Volunteers can:

  • Gain a firsthand understanding of the complexities of our current healthcare system
  • See how service projects can help shape policy
  • Fully understand the various barriers to care in a poor, urban environment
  • See how care coordination and social support can affect health outcomes
  • Gain added training for their future careers (particularly health related careers)
  • Develop communication skills
  • Have the opportunity to reutilize skills after retirement
  • Meet dedicated and engaging professionals committed to improving the health of Camden residents
